Turn a hot compost pile by mixing material from the outside of the pile to the center and the center to the outside. Add water as necessary to keep the pile evenly moist, but not wet.

After the first time the pile heats and cools, it is necessary to turn the pile every few weeks. Once the compost does not heat with turning, it is ready for use in the garden. Generally, finished compost takes several months, though if turned more frequently, it can take as little as a month. The disadvantage is that turning compost is labor intensive. It also requires having a good amount of raw materials on hand, including stockpiled brown and fresh green material for the initial build.
